It's the most wonderful time of the year, as the song says -- except if you are a college basketball coach or player.

Most schools are in the middle of the fall semester's final exams this month and the Christmas holiday usually brings with it travel and scheduling complications, as well.

Final exams pose different problems for different teams, but the end result is the same -- it's a hard week for a basketball team to improve. In fact, most coaches are happy just to maintain their team's level of play during exam week. They aren't concerned about improving but merely surviving the grueling week. It is a unique time of the season.
