Team preview: Brown
Blue Ribbon Illustrated previews the 2003-04 college basketball season, exclusively on Insider.
In the world of Division I basketball, a conference loss isn't the end of the season. Numerous teams with six, seven and sometimes more conference defeats qualify for the NCAA Tournament by virtue of winning its conference tournament. Indeed, three days of basketball being rewarded over two months seems unfair, but it's reality for the majority of Division I teams.
Except for the eight Ivy League teams. In 1998, the Big Ten began a tournament, and in 2002, the Pac-10 did as well, leaving the Ivy League as the lone league in the country that doesn't have a tournament. Thus, with Penn losing one game in 2001-02 and finishing undefeated last season in Ivy play, it's more or less one league defeat and the dream of postseason is over.
