Texas-San Antonio coach Tim Carter entered last season knowing it would be hard to match the 19 wins his team had the year before. After all, he would be without four-year all-conference standout Devin Brown and SLC Player-of-the-Year McEverett Powers. But never did he think the task would be as difficult as it turned out to be.

And who could blame him? UTSA had been an annual power in the Southland since winning the regular-season crown in 1992, its inaugural season as a league member. The Roadrunners simply re-loaded year after year, finishing no worse than third in the league standings nine times in 11 years. Carter also guided his squad to the conference tournament title and subsequent trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1999.
