Team preview: Appalachian State
Blue Ribbon Illustrated previews the 2004-05 college basketball season, exclusively on Insider.
Expectations were high for the Mountaineers, who had won 19 games and been one of the most potent offensive teams in the nation in 2002-03. But they ended up losing more games last year than they had won the previous season, going 9-21.
The problem was offense, or lack thereof. Appalachian State's scoring output plunged from nearly 84 points per game to less than 70, and early wins over teams like LaSalle, George Washington, SMU and James Madison were lost in the wake of 12 losses in the final 13 games.
