Bowden's future still undetermined

When news of a website surfaced this week, University of South Carolina officials took a strong stand, extending Lou Holtz's contract by one season through 2008 to underscore the administration's support for their coach. When new indications surfaced on Tuesday that Tommy Bowden is on shaky ground at Clemson, Tigers' athletic director Terry Don Phillips went home with the flu, leaving behind a statement making no mention of Bowden's future, other than to say it will be evaluated after the season

Clemson and South Carolina play out their bitter rivalry on Saturday with an ironic twist: Holtz, who is 1-3 against Bowden, has said more publicly in support of Bowden than the Tigers' administration has.

When told that Holtz had called criticism of Bowden "off base,'' Bowden joked, "I'm starting to like him more and more.''
