Texas Tech enters 2004 having to replace five key starters off the nation's top-ranked offense and improve a defense that was the worst in the Big 12. That's not the best scenario for a coach, in this case fifth-year boss Mike Leach, to deal with heading into the final two seasons of his contract. So, athletic director Gerald Myers eased the situation in the spring when he gave Leach a new five-year deal worth a reported $5.675 million that puts him in line with most other Big 12 head coaches.

"I am pleased that Mike has signed an extension to his contract ? through the 2008 season," Myers said. "Mike has done an outstanding job of building an exciting program for our students, alumni and fans. We are looking forward to many years of Red Raider football under Coach Leach and his staff."

While the contract extension took care of half of a potential problem, now it's up to Leach to make sure the Red Raiders continue their success.
