Whispers from around the NFL

  • There are some who are whispering that RB Clinton Portis – a home-run back in a grind-it-out offense – is not a great fit in the Redskins' system, but it could be a matter of patience. Because the Redskins trap and pull more than the Broncos, Portis consistently has found himself on the heels of his blockers.

  • The Raiders' offensive line will have to bring its A-game with Kerry Collins in the lineup because not only does he hang in the pocket to take more shots deep, but he lacks the quick feet Rich Gannon possessed.

  • Though overshadowed by Dewayne Robertson, Jets DT Jason Ferguson is off to, arguably, the best start of his career. We hear that he has really responded well to the new defensive scheme, is in great shape and is playing for a new contract.
