Fired Rivera: 'Absolutely' plan to coach again

Fired Panthers coach Ron Rivera has no plans to walk away from the league he has been a part of as a player and coach for 33 years, saying, "My intent is to coach again."

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has decided to have surgery on his Lisfranc injury that ended his season after Week 2, a league source confirmed to ESPN.com. If all goes well, the recovery should take 8-10 weeks. The NFL Network first reported this.

Ron Rivera's problem with Panthers owner David Tepper using long-term mediocrity is the way the league is set up he believes every four or five years you have to reset. He reminds the Panthers' struggles didn't start until "our quarterback got hurt.'' He was referring to Cam Newton, who dealt with a shoulder issue after a 6-2 start last year and was shut down after Week 2 this season with a Lisfranc injury. He believes the core is here to win.

Ron Rivera when asked if he wants to coach again replied, "Absolutely.'' He had talked a few years ago about not wanting to coach late in his career, but he seems driven to prove himself somewhere else. "I'll be honest with you, I'm excited,'' he said.
