Billings agrees to deal with Browns, agency says

Andrew Billings, who developed into one of the Bengals' most reliable interior linemen over the past three seasons, has reached a deal with the Browns, his representatives said.

After focusing on offense early in free agency, the Browns turned to defense Wednesday. They needed to add both a No. 1 safety and a veteran LB and they accomplished both in signing Karl Joseph and B.J. Goodson to one-year deals. A base defense linebacker, Goodson figures to be the bridge as athletic 2019 rookies Mack Wilson and Sione Takitaki continue to develop. Joseph will lead a safety group that figures to include another free agent signing and potentially two draft selections.

By signing Jack Conklin, the Browns are on their way to turning their pass protection for QB Baker Mayfield from a weakness to a strength. Last year, Cleveland's two bookends, Greg Robinson and Chris Hubbard, ranked outside the top 40 in the NFL in pass block win rate. Conklin, who signed for three years and $42 million, ranked No. 3 among RTs. The Browns can now turn their focus to LT, which could include drafting Mayfield's blindside protector of the future with the No. 10 overall pick.

Among the issues Browns QB Baker Mayfield had last year was reliability at TE. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Browns TEs had only 41 receptions, which ranked 30th. To begin free agency, the Browns addressed that, signing the top TE on the market in Austin Hooper. New head coach Kevin Stefanski used multiple tight ends more than any offensive coordinator in Minnesota last year. The combination of that philosophy and the addition of Hooper should aid Mayfield, in play-action and the red zone.

TE Hooper agrees to lucrative deal with Browns

Pro Bowl tight end Austin Hooper has agreed to a four-year contract with the Cleveland Browns. Hooper told ESPN's Vaughn McClure the deal is worth $44 million, with $23 million guaranteed.

The Browns, as expected, released safety Morgan Burnett, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury last year. Burnett started eight games before the injury. The move underscores the work the Browns will need to do at safety this offseason. Right now, they have Sheldrick Redwine, who was a rookie last year, and really not much else at the position.
