For the second straight week the Cowboys will hold a kicker tryout with Brett Maher's struggles continuing. Nick Rose and Tristan Vizcaino will return for a second straight week for a tryout and will be joined by Kai Forbath, who kicked made his lone field goal attempt but missed an extra point last week with New England. Forbath has made 85.8% of his kicks in an eight-year career with five teams.

Leighton Vander Esch is expected to undergo more testing on his neck on Monday after missing the last three games and four of the last six. “We're going to do right by Leighton Vander Esch,” Jason Garrett said. “He's not going to rush back. We're not going to rush him back but obviously he's champing at the bit to play. He's been an impactful player for us.”

Jason Garrett said he did not anticipate making any staff changes with three games to go. He did say there could be lineup changes. “The guys who earn the playing time by playing the right way are going to play more,” Garrett said. “Obviously you can't swap everybody out. That's not what we're talking about, but we have to look for opportunities to play the guys who play the right way and have done that consistently when they've gotten opportunities.”

Wide receiver Cedrick Wilson's season is likely over because of a sprained anterior cruciate ligament but it does not appear he will need reconstructive surgery that could keep him out for most of the offseason program. Punter Chris Jones suffered an abdominal strain but should be able to continue to play. The hope is running back Tony Pollard (ankle) can return to practice next week and play.

Regarding defensive tackle Antwaun Woods, who was arrested last week on a marijuana charge, Jason Garrett said, “Obviously a disappointing situation. I don't know all the details of the situation right now but not something we want.” Garrett said the decision to keep Woods in Dallas for the game was partly due to the arrest and partly due to the knee injury that kept him.

Jason Garrett said the Cowboys will continue to look at the kicker situation with Brett Maher missing his league-high sixth field goal attempt Thursday. Last week the Cowboys worked out three kickers but opted to keep Maher. No word yet on if they will bring in different kickers this week.

Dak Prescott hurt the index finger on his right hand and sprained his left hand Thursday against Chicago but coach Jason Garrett said the quarterback seemed to come out of the game OK and will be fine for Dec. 15 against the Los Angeles Rams.

According to Elias, the Cowboys would be the seventh team to make the playoffs with two losing streaks of at least three games should they qualify. The 2016 Lions are the most recent and they lost in the wild-card round. The 2011 Broncos and 2009 Jets are the only teams to have won a playoff game with two three-game losing streaks.

Dak Prescott described the mood in the Cowboys locker room after Thursday's loss that leaves them at 6-7: "Frustrating, I think that's the best word for it. It's a blessing, fortunate enough, I don't know how it is, we're still in the lead for our division. You have to be thankful for that. But we can't hang our hat on that. We have got to figure out our issues right now, fix them, and get better."

Jason Garrett said he can't speak to whether the constant questioning of his job security is weighing on the players, but he believes they are still buying in. “I just see how they come to work every day,” Garrett said. “I see how they practice and unfortunately we didn't carry the practice work to the game.” Nor did Garrett see any players quit. “I don't believe that,” he said.

A displeased Jerry Jones addressed the media after Thursday's 31-24 loss to Chicago and he made it clear he doesn't care if the Cowboys finish 7-9 or 8-8 and make the postseason. “Are you asking me if I would take the division and go to the playoffs, if we got in on any basis? The answer is yes. Absolutely yes,” Jones said. “Acceptable? I don't know. Not if we're not playing good but if we're playing a lot better than we played tonight, I'll take getting in.”

The Cowboys season is not over. It just feels that way after Thursday's 31-24 loss to the Chicago Bears. At 6-7, the Cowboys will be in first place in the NFC East entering Week 15 even if the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New York Giants Monday thanks to their 37-10 win against the Eagles in October. But this loss was jarring for how inept the defense was against a limited offense and how ineffective the offense was after an opening-drive touchdown.

Amari Cooper has his third touchdown on the road this season and eighth on the season, which is a career high. Cooper became the first Cowboys receiver to record a 1,000-yard season since Dez Bryant had 1,320 yards in 2014.

If you want to feel good about something during this mess: a win or a loss doesn't statistically alter the Cowboys' playoff chances much. According to ESPN's Football Power Index, the Cowboys had a 77 percent chance to make the playoffs with a win Thursday and a 70% chance with a loss.

The Cowboys enter the fourth quarter trailing, 24-7 and facing fourth and 1 from the Chicago 2. Because of the ineptness of the NFC East, the season is not on the line, but the outcome of this game is if it has not already been decided. So much is on the line for so many people with 15 minutes to play.
