Riddick: Mahomes the greatest NFL draft-day trade of all time (1:52)

The uncertainty over Tyreek Hill's legal issues, last season's injuries to Sammy Watkins and the free-agent loss of Chris Conley leave the Chiefs without a lot to count on at wide receiver. The Chiefs haven't yet added a wide receiver during the offseason other than signing a pair of street free agents, Sammie Coates and Davon Grayson. “I don't know if it changes the priorities,'' general manager Brett Veach said as the Chiefs are concluding their draft preparations. “We have a good group of guys that we really like.'' Coach Andy Reid said this week he expects Demarcus Robinson to replace Conley as the third receiver. Veach mentioned Byron Pringle, who was on the verge of making the team as an undrafted rookie from Kansas State last year before a preseason injury ended his season. “I think he's a guy that can step up and surprise,'' Veach said.

Meanwhile, Chiefs GM Brett Veach is heavily involved in draft preparations to the point where he said he hasn't studied the regular season schedule. “Other than us playing at Jacksonville, I don't even know the rest of our schedule because I've been in that draft room,'' Veach said. He later acknowledged knowing that after the opener against the Jaguars the Chiefs would play at Oakland and then have their home opener against the Ravens. But that's as far as he would allow himself to go. “I'm just worried about this draft and worried about the offseason and then after that I just want to get through the preseason healthy,'' he said. “There are so many things that can happen from then to now, not just with us but with other teams.''

The draft is still a week away but Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said coach Andy Reid is already planning for offseason and training camp by drawing up new plays for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “He's locked in on his scheme (evaluation) stuff right now,'' Veach said. “I went in (to Reid's office) the other day and he had index cards like that thick. He called them ‘My new Pat plays.' So he was excited.''

Chiefs GM Brett Veach on the state of the roster heading into the draft: “I feel good about the roster (but) we didn't win the Super Bowl so we can get better. All across the board there's talent that we can acquire and we can get more depth on both sides of the football . . . The things you do in free agency kind of protect you in the draft so you don't have to take a player that you feel is a second- or third-round value in the first round. So you make some moves in (free agency) and maybe some of those moves are big like the Honey Badger and some smaller moves.''

The Kansas Chiefs will play three of their first four games on the road for the second straight year. That had happened to them once in the previous 10 seasons.

The Chiefs signed safety Tyrann Matthieu to be, in a sense, their Patrick Mahomes on defense and lead the way in revitalizing a unit that lost its way in recent seasons. Mahomes said shortly after the Chiefs gathered for the start of their offseason conditioning program on Monday that he's already taken with Mathieu's can-do attitude. "If you meet him, you see the mentality and the leadership he has just by being himself," Mahomes said. " he's going to come in with the mentality of he wants to be great (and) he wants the Kansas City Chiefs to be known as a great defensive team, a team that can shut people down. He brings that mentality as he walks through the locker room."

"I've never been around a guy with that much stardom. It was fun to see him in that environment," Chiefs TE Travis Kelce on hanging out with Patrick Mahomes at the Final Four.

As Chiefs began their offseason conditioning program today, Tyreek Hill is working with his teammates. "We're full-steam ahead,'' coach Andy Reid said. "I'm not here to judge. I'm here to coach."
