Chiefs' Ford takes the blame: 'Sloppy football'

Chiefs linebacker Dee Ford took the blame for lining up offside in Sunday's loss to the Patriots and negating what likely would have been a game-winning interception.

Adam Teicher ESPN Staff Writer

Andy Reid's regret with Dee Ford's offside penalty in the fourth quarter that cost the Chiefs an interception that would likely have won the AFC championship game was not with the call itself. He acknowledged Ford was offside. “It wasn't but by a few inches but I thought it was legitimate,'' Reid said. It was that in his opinion a call like that isn't often made in big games. “Normally you're warned and the coach is warned if somebody is doing that before they throw it in a game of that magnitude,'' Reid said. "But they did. He didn't waste any time doing it. He didn't wait until the interception to throw it. He had his hand on the flag right from the get-go.''

One critical aspect of the Patriots' victory tonight that shouldn't be overlooked is their pass protection. The New England offensive line recorded the very best team Pass Block Win Rate (PBWR) of the entire season vs. the Chiefs tonight at 91%. That's utter domination against an above-average pass rushing defense. ESPN's pass blocking and rushing metrics are based on raw player tracking data via NextGen Stats.

Seth Walder ESPN Analytics

The Patriots recorded a Pass Block Win Rate of 90.5% on Sunday -- that is the best pass blocking game by any team in any game this entire season. Guard Shaq Mason led the way along the offensive line with a 100% PBWR, while TE Rob Gronkowski and RB James White also had a 100% PBWR on 12 pass blocks apiece (meaning none of the three were beaten by a defender within the first 2.5 seconds after the snap on a single play). PBWR is an ESPN metric powered by NFL Next Gen Stats.

The Patriots didn't have to be complicated on offense in overtime. Move WR Julian Edelman pre-snap to get him off the ball clean, and create isolation matchups for TE Rob Gronkowski. Win the 1-on-1s vs. man coverage. And then go back to the run game to close out the win over the Chiefs in the AFC Championship.

"It's a bright future. We've got good players and we'll get over the hump." — Chiefs coach Andy Reid.
