Overall: Thomas played as a reserve tackle in his true freshman season in 2000, as well as his sophomore season in 2001 before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in the Florida game in 2002. He wound up redshirting in 2002 and returned as a junior in 2003, when he only played in 10 of 13 games because of a severely sprained ankle and finished with just 22 tackles and one sack. He played as Vince Wilfork's backup in 2003 before moving into a starting role as a senior in 2004. Thomas was having a breakout season prior to suffering a left knee injury that required surgery and cost him four games. Thomas returned at the end of the season (Virginia Tech) and finished the season healthy, but was not the same player that he was prior to the injury.
