Jake Livermore helps Hull City prevent embarrassment against Liverpool

A goal frenzy at Anfield included two calm penalty goals from James Milner as Jurgen Klopp's men downed Hull City 5-1.

A first away defeat of the season could hardly have been more emphatic. Hull City were outclassed by an effervescent Liverpool side and were fortunate to escape with a semblance of pride intact. That was not a given once Ahmed Elmohamady was sent off in a penalty incident that gave Liverpool a 2-0 lead just after the half-hour mark. Philippe Coutinho made it 4-1 early in the second half, and from then on, it was damage limitation for a City side that has now lost three of their last four Premier...

Mike Phelan boosted as options open up at Hull ahead of Liverpool trip

Hull City's record signing Ryan Mason is in contention to face Liverpool this weekend.

First team coach Stephen Clemence was up for media duties after Hull City's EFL Cup win away to Stoke City on Wednesday night and a broad grin spread across his face when asked how many players had nudged their way into the weekend plans to conquer Liverpool.

"Those headaches are for Mick," said Clemence, gently shifting responsibilities on to caretaker boss Mike Phelan.

"I'm sure he'll have plenty to think about going into the weekend."

Phelan certainly does. After naming the starting XI for each...

Chelsea will look to hit back after last week's 2-1 defeat at home to Liverpool when they travel to bitter rivals Arsenal on Saturday evening.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are stuck in a rut. Yes, they won against League One Northampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, but it's two defeats in a row in the league ahead of the visit of champions Leicester.

Elsewhere, Manchester City have a 100 percent record under Pep Guardiola, and the latest team to try and stop them, Swansea, lost 2-1...

Ryan Mason shows class in Hull City's EFL Cup win over poor Stoke outfit

Ryan Mason scored Hull City's first goal in the 2-1 win at Stoke City.

Hull City reached the last 16 of the EFL Cup for the third time in four years as picture-book goals from Ryan Mason and Markus Henriksen completed a comeback to defeat Premier League rivals Stoke City.

The Tigers, who retained just three players from the weekend defeat to Arsenal, could count themselves fortunate to emerge as winners from a game dominated by their hosts, but it was another feather in Mike Phelan's cap as caretaker boss. This was the very first time that Hull City have won an away...

Hull City fell to a second consecutive home defeat as Arsenal again turned on the style at the KCOM Stadium in a 4-1 win for the visitors on Saturday.

Six visits to the Tigers' current home have yielded six victories, and the latest was never in doubt after a straight red card to Jake Livermore late in the first half. City could have thrown in the towel when 2-0 down early in the second half, but there was a certain resilience to this heavy defeat.

Not until Arsenal bagged two goals in the last...

1. Arsenal ease to victory ... eventually

This was a confidence-building 4-1 scoreline away from home, but there remain a few concerns for Arsenal.

Only they could make hard work of a two-goal lead against 10 men with 35 minutes to go. When they choose to flex their muscles, they can take on anyone, but their capacity for self-destruction is without parallel in the modern game.

Having spurned countless opportunities...
