Shoots of recovery at Hull City following midweek EFL Cup success

Harry Maguire and Michael Dawson provided the goals in Hull's win on Tuesday.
Hull City got back to winning ways with victory in the EFL Cup over Bristol City.

Every recovery needs a first step and Hull City will hope theirs was made under the Ashton Gate floodlights on Tuesday night. Fortunes in the EFL Cup are unlikely to define a season but a 2-1 win at Bristol City was not short on significance.

"You can see in the dressing room that a win is a win," said head coach Mike Phelan. "It means a lot for confidence. We've shown we can football matches again."

Repeating the trick at Watford on Saturday will be an altogether stiffer test than squeezing past...

Abel Hernandez the only ray of light as Hull struggle against Stoke

Mike Phelan explains that if Hull are to remain in the Premier League, they cannot continue to have mental lapses.

Hull City's miserable run of form added another instalment as Mike Phelan's side were soundly beaten at home by Stoke City.

The Potters had not won away from home since March but were far too strong for Mike Phelan's side thanks to Xherdan Shaqiri's two long-range efforts. A fifth consecutive defeat never looked like being avoided and now the Tigers find themselves in the Premier League's bottom three for the first time this season.

Hull City use advertising boards to show crowd which lyrics to chant

Just when you thought that Hull City's contentious owners had run out of ways to fuel the discord between themselves and their supporters, they go and devise a novel new approach to fan the flames.

During Saturday's 2-0 home defeat against Stoke, the club used the advertising boards at the KCOM Stadium to flash up the lyrics to chants and songs for the fans to sing along to.

Of course, this kind of thing doesn't tend to go down well with British fans, who don't enjoy being told what to sing and when.

Jose Mourinho returns to face Chelsea, Manchester City's Southampton test

ESPN FC's Shaka Hislop tries his hand at Premier League predictor, but does he expect a stalemate at the Bridge?

Jose Mourinho returns to former club Chelsea with Manchester United on Sunday having struggled to break down Liverpool in the 0-0 draw at Anfield, but seeing his side score four against Feyenoord.

Arsenal are flying high after their demolition of Ludogorets, which was their seventh win in a row in all competitions, and will hope add to that streak against struggling Middlesbrough, while leaders Manchester City take on Southampton hoping to get back on track after their humbling at Barcelona.

Hull City welcome back Michael Dawson for must-win game vs. Stoke

Hull can't afford another heavy defeat this weekend. After losing at Bournemouth, the Tigers need a win vs. Stoke.

Upon learning the identity of Hull City's first four visitors to the KCOM Stadium, former boss Steve Bruce joked how he had considered swimming to the bottom of his holiday pool and staying there. Leicester City, the recently crowned Premier League champions, were the first to be sent to East Yorkshire, followed quickly by Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

The formidable four might draw the crowds but were unlikely to cough up many points. Leicester, as it turned out, did just that in the...

Mike Phelan's miserable day as Bournemouth humiliate Hull City

Mike Phelan gave his reaction after Hull City's thrashing by Bournemouth.

Hull City equalled their heaviest defeat in the Premier League and they could have no complaints after a pathetic showing in Saturday's 6-1 defeat at the Vitality Stadium. Bournemouth were alarmingly comfortable in securing all three points and Ryan Mason's equaliser for the Tigers in the first half proved to be nothing more than a bump in the road for Eddie Howe's side. Mike Phelan could not have imagined a worst start to his reign as full-time head coach. Embarrassing did not cover a fourth straight...
