Newcastle could give Aleksandar Mitrovic first chance to deputise for the injured Dwight Gayle against Bristol City.

A hamstring injury will keep the Championship's top-scorer out for at least a month and Mitrovic is expected to edge the likes of Daryl Murphy and Ayoze Perez when Rafael Benitez looks for alternatives.

Midfielder Isaac Hayden is also out for several weeks following ankle surgery.

Vurnon Anita (ankle) and Roland Aarons (knee) have been back in training and are close to returning.

Newcastle troll Aston Villa's Henri Lansbury on Twitter after own goal

Newcastle comfortably saw off Aston Villa to go top of the Championship on Monday night, cruising to a straightforward 2-0 victory at St James' Park.

Villa were a massive 30 points behind their opponents going into the fixture, with an own goal from new signing Henri Lansbury helping to make sure his side's dismal winless run was duly extended to nine games by the end of the night.

Rather unsportingly, Newcastle's official Twitter account chose to troll Lansbury after the match by posting a photo...

Newcastle United reclaimed top spot in the Championship following a hard-earned 2-0 win over struggling Aston Villa at St James' Park.

The Villans' wait for a league win in 2017 continued as Yoan Gouffran's seventh goal of the season three minutes before half-time was followed by a nightmare own goal from Henri Lansbury just before the hour.

Lansbury, the former Nottingham Forest midfielder signed in January, was left humiliated on the line as he helped in Jamaal Lascelles' effort that hit the post,...

Newcastle's promotion rivals' wins 'getting irritating now' - Jack Colback

Jack Colback
Jack Colback's Newcastle side currently sit second in the Championship table, five points above Huddersfield in third.

Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback is growing increasingly irritated at the refusal of the chasing pack in the race for promotion to the Premier League to go away.

The Magpies and Brighton have set the pace at the top of the table for several months now, but having established a significant gap between themselves and the rest, they have been unable to break away with Huddersfield, Reading, Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday still hot on their heels.

Colback, who will hope to retain his place in the starting...

Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles spared goalkeeper Karl Darlow's blushes with an 80th-minute equaliser as a pulsating SkyBet Championship game at Norwich ended in a 2-2 draw,

Lascelles volleyed home at the back post after the hosts had hit back from falling behind to an Ajose Perez goal after just 23 seconds.

Jacob Murphy equalised after 12 minutes before an awful error from Darlow, who miss-kicked a routine clearance, gifted Norwich the lead seven minutes later.
