Sociedad have not played in the competition since the 2012-13 season but are currently fifth in La Liga and in contention for a qualification spot.

Sociedad forward Carlos Vela opened the scoring in the 26th minute after a deft control of Inigo Martinez's long forward lob.

Espanyol forward Hernan Perez leveled for the hosts nine minutes later when he eluded two defenders in the box before firing over goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

But on the hour mark, Illarramendi poached an errant pass...

Sevilla settle for draw after Samir Nasri misses penalty; Real Sociedad win

Neymar believes La Liga is the best league in the world and sites their recent dominance in European competition as proof.
Samir Nasri could not convert from a penalty spot and Sevilla could only manage a draw.

Samir Nasri could not capitalise on the opportunity to fire Sevilla closer to La Liga leaders Real Madrid as they settled for a goalless draw with Villarreal on Sunday.

The former Arsenal midfielder saw his 49th-minute spot kick saved by goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo and third-placed Sevilla could not find a breakthrough.

In a tight encounter, Nasri was handed his chance when Sevilla skipper Vitolo was fouled by defender Mario, but his penalty was kept out by Asenjo.

The visitors gave as good as...

Real Madrid cruised to a 3-0 win over Sociedad at home, with Cristiano Ronaldo finding the score-sheet once again.

Real Madrid capitalised on slip-ups by their two main title rivals to open up a four-point lead at the top of La Liga.

Matea Kovacic's first-ever La Liga goal put Zinedine Zidane's men on their way to a 3-0 win over Real Sociedad that enabled them to bounce back from a humbling Copa del Rey exit at the hands of Celta Vigo.

Cristiano Ronaldo was also on target at the Bernabeu, for the 20th time for his club so far this season, and Alvaro Morata added the third as Real completed the double over Sociedad...
