Joleon Lescott joins AEK Athens from Aston Villa on two-year contract

Joleon Lescott made 30 appearances for Aston Villa last season as they were relegated.

Joleon Lescott has left Aston Villa and joined AEK Athens on a two-year deal, the Greek Superleague club have announced.

Lescott, 34, joined Villa last summer, making 30 Premier League appearances as the club were relegated to the Championship.

The former England international won the Premier League twice with Manchester City, but had not featured for Villa this campaign under new manager Roberto Di Matteo.

Out-of-favour Chelsea winger Marko Marin has joined Olympiakos in a permanent deal.

Marin, who arrived at Stamford Bridge from Werder Bremen in a transfer worth £7 million in July 2012, made just 16 appearances for the club in his debut season and had not featured in three years, instead spending time on loan at Sevilla, Fiorentina, Anderlecht and Tranzonspor.

Greek Super League delayed at least two weeks over fears of violence

The Greek league suffered from fan violence last season.

Greece's sports minister has postponed the start of top-tier league matches for more than two weeks because of fears of violence.

The Greek championship had been due to start on Saturday but Stavros Kontonis said it would be delayed until "at least" Sept. 5.

In a statement on Thursday, Kontonis said that police officials suggested the postponement, arguing that a festering squabble involving the Greek football federation, league organisers and clubs posed serious security concerns if matches went...

Paulo Bento named Olympiakos boss after Victor Sanchez dismissal

Most experts predict that Paulo Bento's Portugal team will be bidding adieu to Brazil following Thursday's group stage finale versus Ghana.
Paulo Bento spent four years in charge of the Portuguese national team.

Olympiakos have named former Portugal coach Paulo Bento as their new manager.

Bento, 47, replaces Victor Sanchez, who was sacked by the Greek champions on Tuesday after less than two months in charge. 

Bento, a former Portugal international, began his coaching career at home-town club Sporting Lisbon before taking charge of the national team in 2010 following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.

Victor Sanchez lasted just two months in charge of Greek side Olympiakos.

Olympiakos have sacked coach Victor Sanchez after less than two months in charge.

The Spaniard was named as the successor to title-winning boss Marco Silva on June 23, but the Greek champions have now decided to part company with the former Deportivo La Coruna manager.

The move comes after Olympiakos were last week knocked out of the Champions League third qualifying round by Hapoel Beer-Sheva following a 1-0 aggregate defeat.
