Crucial fortnight as Chinese football bids for wider respect

Shanghai SIPG striker Hulk
Shanghai SIPG brought in Braziilan striker Hulk for a CSL transfer record fee.

How important is continental performance to a league's standing and reputation? It's a question which has dogged the Premier League's claim to being the "greatest league in the world" over recent seasons, at the same time as English sides' Champions League performances have dropped off.

China vs. South Korea in Champions League and World Cup showdowns

Shanghai SIPG face Jeonbuk for a place in the Asian Champions League semifinals later this month.

The next few weeks produces a fascinating club and country China vs. South Korea football trilogy that could prove to be as big as a Hollywood blockbuster.

This East Asian rivalry has historically been one-sided in the favour of Seoul (Korea have lost just once in 30 international meetings) but the upper-hand is not quite as strong as it was.

That will be tested this week in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Asian Champions League as the two East Asian ties are both Sino-Korean affairs.

China boss Gao Hongbo names 25-man squad, including Feng Xiaoting

Gao Hongbo
Gao Hongbo will lead his side into the World Cup qualifiers.

China national team boss Gao Hongbo has included injured Guangzhou Evergrande defender Feng Xiaoting in his 25-man preliminary squad for next month's 2018 World Cup qualifying matches against South Korea and Iran.

Feng picked up an injury during the national side's training camp in Kunming earlier this month and missed Evergrande's 2-1 defeat against Shanghai Shenghua in the Chinese Super League on Saturday.

The centre-back was also ruled out of his side's 2-2 draw with Guangzhou R&F in the first...

Luiz Felipe Scolari tells China boss Gao Hongbo to be his own man

Luiz Felipe Scolari has plenty of experience in management.

Guangzhou Evergrande boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has told China national team boss Gao Hongbo to ignore the advice of others and back his own decisions as the nation gears up for the next stage of their attempt to qualify for Russia 2018.

Gao's team face South Korea in the first match of the final phase of Asian World Cup qualifying in Seoul on Sept. 1, with China failing to reach the final tournament since making their debut in 2002.

"No matter what people are telling you, do what you think is correct,"...

Newcastle's big role in China-Australia footballing partnership - Martin Lee

ESPN FC's Jason Dasey and PJ Roberts discuss new Chinese ownership for Newcastle Jets and the Bakrie Group's plans to sell Brisbane Roar.

As China and Australia become ever more intertwined, there is one humble club leading the way in nurturing the relationship between the two countries from a football perspective.

A-League outfit the Newcastle Jets have recently been purchased by Chinese businessman Martin Lee, and his dream of connecting his homeland with Australia -- the current champions of Asia -- is starting to come to fruition.

Lee, who also invests heavily in Chinese football through Shenzhen Renren, as well as European football,...
