David Silva and Diego Costa were on target but Spain made hard work of seeing off Macedonia in Skopje.

The visitors were 2-0 up and cruising but left the back door open midway through the second half, allowing Stefan Ristovski to pull one back.

Nevertheless, a 2-1 victory ensured Spain remain top of Group G on goal difference despite Italy's 5-0 win over Liechtenstein.

Spain took the lead after 15 minutes following a classic Spanish build-up.

Andres Iniesta casually scooped the ball over the Macedonia...

Marouane Fellaini nets Belgium winner; Russia's Roman Zobnin injured

Marouane Fellaini headed home the winner for Belgium.

Belgium edged Czech Republic 2-1 in a friendly on Monday, with Michy Batshuayi and Marouane Fellaini scoring to make up for a defensive howler from Kevin De Bruyne.

Batshuayi, whose goal for Chelsea sealed the Premier League title last month, highlighted his fine form with a low drive across goal to open the score in the 25th minute.

But four minutes later, De Bruyne was stripped of possession in his own box by Ladislav Krejci, who passed across for Michael Krmencik to equalise past Thibaut...

Spain defeat France with help of video replay while Italy beat Netherlands

The video assistant referee twice played an important role as Spain beat France 2-0 in a friendly in Paris on Tuesday.

FIFA is testing VARs ahead of their possible use at the World Cup, and the system ruled out a goal that had been given for France, and later overruled a linesman to grant Spain a goal.

Antoine Griezmann thought he had put France ahead in the second half, but after the goal was originally given, the VAR called down to the match referee and disallowed the goal for offside...

Spain and Italy both cruise to wins as Ireland hold Wales to goalless draw

Gianluigi Buffon acknowledges the crowd during his landmark game.
Gianluigi Buffon faced only one shot on target in his 1,000th game for club and country.

Gianluigi Buffon kept a clean sheet in his 1,000th professional appearance for club and country as Italy beat Albania 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Friday.

Buffon had little to do in his 168th cap for Italy, making only one save as the Italians controlled the action in Palermo.

The opening goal came in the 12th minute after Migjen Basha hauled down Andrea Belotti in the box during a set piece, and Daniele De Rossi converted the penalty.

Visiting Albania fans threw flares on the...

Spain's 4-0 win over Macedonia -- their 93rd home victory in a qualifying campaign -- set a new all-time record.

Julen Lopetegui's side eclipsed the mark for all European and World Cup qualifiers set by Russia (including the Soviet Union) with relative ease, even if it did require a couple of late goals to boost the scoreline.

An own goal from Darko Velkovski gave Spain a half-time lead and after Vitolo doubled their advantage just past the hour Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal and Aritz Aduriz scored...
